Twilight Zone Presents "The Last Sixty Seconds"

Perhaps the saddest tragedy in all of comicdom is that the vast majority of Gold Key painted covers remain un-credited and un-indexed. This is heartbreaking, especially once you’ve let your eyes feast on this cover to The Twilight Zone No. 6, February, 1964. Dear artist: if you are out there, you are loved.

At least the Grand Comic Database (GCD) has most of the story art on file. This story of the last minute of a suicide’s life was penciled by Mike Sekowski and inked by Mike Peppe.

Sekowski was a DC man at this point in his career, but he was also a notorious ink-slinger, going where the moonlighting job took him. I really like the way Sekowski handles the body in water; as well as the way he draws the protagonist . . . oops, almost gave it away. You will know the cool panels when you get to them. All scans are from my own comic. Just click on the image to get the big picture.

I throw this next page in as an example of a running feature in Gold Key comics, the “Keys of Knowledge.” Young readers were encouraged to “collect the whole series for useful knowledge.” Well, alright. Was there ever a young reader mesmerized by the plight of turn of the century motorists? Apparently, according to this knowledge key, they got stuck in the mud a lot. All done in glorious black and white, too. Man, you just have to love the effort here to be "good" for kids.

I re-read the opening page until properly channeling the voice of Rod Serling in my head ! Great story~ but~ Simone was wrong... If she married Travers, she could hug the family jewels every night !

ps: I also enjoyed the real dog hair you scanned into the tale on the bottom left of page five. I have scanned plenty of cat hairs over @ my blog~ but always gotten away with the crime !!

Lysdexicuss: Oh, I hate you for telling me that! It's some cat hairs! Bad Jerome! You know what this means, don't you? Back to the scanner I go.

Thanks for stopping by and reviewing each page of the story! ;-)

PS: I did the same thing with the Sterling voice. -- Mykal

You can't go wrong with a talking ventriloquist dummy story! But I gotta admit, the midget DID have a better act - imagine flinging yourself off the balcony doing a perfect swan dive into the shallow fountaln below! Now that's hard sell!

Apocoloyte: I had the same thought! That midget was amazing. In one panel, he even floats above the guy when he's sleeping, presumably hung there on fine wires. Incredible! -- Mykal

Great blog! It's a shame most of that awsome cover art has gone un appreciated over the years. Thanks for giving it a spotlight. Can't wait till you get around to "UFO Flying Saucers", it was one of my favorites.

Darn cool story (as were almost all the Twilight Zone comics). Hey, if Paul Traver could make it big as a ventriloquist in Paris, where Jerry Lewis was king, he could make it anywhere. I just loved Mike Sekowski. He was fantastic on JLA, and even here, doesn't his Travers with white-face remind you of his great take on Solomon Grundy? I also like the way Sekowski drew that red sportster (Jaguar XKE??)in the opening mini-splash. Thanks tons for sharing this Mykal.

RE: Glad you liked it. You know, the more I see of Sekowski, the more I like. The panels with Travers' water-bleached corpse were my favorite part of the story as well. Horrifying yet somehow very sad and touching. "Hey, we're friends".

I know, wasn't that car cool? -- Mykal
