Mighty Samson - "The Renegade Robot"

Samson was a giant, blond mutant roaming the post-apocalyptic landscape of North America. He served as protector/guide to Sharmaine (who nursed him after a battle with an irradiated monster) and her father, Mindor, archivist of the new world. The title follows the three as they struggle to survive in a shattered world of ruins and mutated monsters.

In this tale Samson struggles with an ex Secret Service robot gone blinky and Queen Terra – who certainly has a royal temper. The cover was painted by Morris Gollub, and the writer and artist team for the story was Otto Binder and Jack Sparling, respectively. Sparling was very good at action panels and a gifted caricaturist - as our trio’s visit to the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials will attest. This is from Mighty Samson No. 9, March, 1967. All scans are of my own comic. Just click the image for the big picture.

This is a hoot! I love how, after kidnapping the blond chick, the queen admits that she wants to hang around to see her robot fight Sampson again. Even in the post-apocolyptic future, they can't let the fanboys down.

the vision of the future in "Mighty Samson" comics always unnerved me...

I have a short stack of MIGHTY SAMSON...but not this one! Gaaa! So wonderful! Must keep my peepers peeled for this at the next comicon.

Tim: I think Queen Terra had a crush on Samson myself. She seems to have the game won a couple of times but lets things remain unresolved so things must continue. Also, She grabs a hold of Samson pretty quick when the going gets rough!

Prof.: Yeah, I know what you mean. I think for what made this title nightmarish is that everything was mutated and everything was menacing, twisted, and evil. There was an ongoing 2-page feature in Samson where Mindor was seen cataloging various species of mutated monsters. I think the most unnerving one in this issue was the giant spider that has rows of teeth. He spits giant webs at you, which his spins in the roof of his mouth. I plan to do a whole post of these 2-page creature features before too long.

Mike: I am always surprised how much I love this title. For some reason, I keep needing to "rediscover" it. It's a great issue and I am glad you enjoyed it! -- Mykal

Well, even though I am familiar with this series, I honestly can't remember ever buying a first run copy of any issues of this title.

My back issue/want list is too extensive at the moment to add anything else, but I wouldn't mind picking up a few of these at some point.

chuck: I know what you mean about back issue wish list. My comic buying at this point is a huge part of my monthly budget. -- Mykal

I have to confess, I was completely ignorant of this title. Kinda Kamandi meets Logan's Run... only before either. This issue is great, though. That robot is very Republic Serials. I loves me some robots.

Aaron: I felt for the robot, who does his best to do his duty. You gotta love when he turns the tables on the Queen and makes her kneel as he steps on her head. Thanks for stopping by! -- Mykal
